A Joyful Evening of Chess on International Chess Day

 


On July 20th, 2023, the CDA Chess Club held a delightful event in celebration of International Chess Day at Ramsey Park. As a proud member of the club, I can attest to the fact that it was an amazing evening filled with fun games, delicious treats, and great company. The turnout was impressive, and we even welcomed a new member who had heard about us online and decided to join in the fun.


We set up the picnic tables and chess boards at the park early in the evening and waited for our fellow members to arrive. Slowly but surely, the park was filled with chess enthusiasts of all ages. It was heartwarming to see so many members of our community come together to celebrate this global event.


As soon as everyone had arrived, the games began. There were players of all different levels, which made it even more exciting. Kids challenged adults, beginners battled seasoned players, and everyone was having a great time. It was wonderful to see how even the most competitive of games were played with a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship.


One of the highlights of the evening was the delicious treats that members brought to share. There was everything from cupcakes and cookies to cheese platters and chicken bits. We all sat down at the picnic tables together and enjoyed the treats while watching the ongoing games. The food and the games went hand in hand, making for the perfect evening.


We also had the pleasure of welcoming a new member to our club that evening. He had stumbled upon our club’s page on the internet and decided to give it a try. It was heartwarming to see how he was quickly welcomed by everyone and was playing games in no time. It is great to see our club growing, and new members joining us to share our love for chess.


As the evening came to an end, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to come together and celebrate International Chess Day. We packed up the boards and headed home, already excited for the regular meeting scheduled for next week at Burger King in Post Falls.

Final Results of the Summer Solstice Chess Tournament and Upcoming Events

The Summer Solstice Chess Tournament concluded with an exciting finale. Players battled it out over three weeks of intense matches. In the Solstice A Bracket, 12 players competed fiercely, with the top finishers being Steve (4.5 points), John (4 points), and Sam and Greg, who each secured 3.5 points. The final night highlighted Steve's remarkable save against John, turning a near-loss into a draw. Sam and Mike’s game also resulted in a draw. Eric and Greg showed their strength by winning both matches that evening. Meanwhile, the Solstice B Bracket was a close contest, with Payton, Emerson, and Frank each achieving 4 points. Payton edged out his competitors through tie-breakers based on opponents' scores. Matt's son, newcomer Emmaus , made a memorable debut. A robust field of 17 players participated in this section, including standout performances from Frank and Isaac, who both won 2 matches and saw Isaac gain an impressive 104 rating points. Competitive Brackets and New Faces: Highlights from July 1

We are pleased to announce the results of our July 1 meeting. The event featured two-round mini-brackets based on ladder rankings, offering thrilling and competitive play for all. Top Brackets: William, Mike, and Alex emerged as the top players in their respective brackets. Alex's Impressive Gain: Alex had an outstanding night, gaining the most ladder points with an impressive 39-point leap. New Participants: We welcomed 16 players, including new additions to the chess ladder: Melissa, Everett, and Brooksley. Next week, we kick off the 3-week "Chess For Success" tournament, featuring two rounds each night for six rounds. Registration for the first night is not required. Reminder: There will not be a beginner's club meeting this week due to the 4th of July holiday. Seats are filling fast for this coming weekend's Starbucks Monthly (register here).
