Knights of the Chessboard

CDA Chess Club · May 18, 2026 · McDonald's at Riverstone · 28 Players · 4 Rounds Complete The field is thinning at the top and widening in the middle — which, come to think of it, describes a lot of us. Monday night's double round at Riverstone McDonald's produced drama in both sections — a runaway leader in the Knaves, a log-jam at the top of the Knights, and a handful of new faces making their tournament debuts. With two rounds remaining, the race is very much alive.
📅 Schedule Update: Due to Memorial Day, Rounds 5 and 6 have been moved to Monday, June 1st. Same time, same place — 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McDonald's at Riverstone.

🎲 Open Play — May 25th: McDonald's is open on Memorial Day, and so are we — informally. Come out for open play on Monday, May 25th at the usual time and place. No tournament rounds — just chess. Come if you can!

♞ The Knights: Erickson Leads, But Three Are Breathing Down His Neck

Ken Erickson remains the man to beat. He drew with Marty P in Round 3 — one of the few times anyone has taken a half-point from him this tournament — then came right back in Round 4 to take down Andrew V, extending his lead to 3½ points. With two rounds left and a full point cushion, the question is no longer whether Erickson wins, but who finishes second. That battle is delightfully messy. Anakin K, Zach F, and Scotty Hohman are all knotted at 2½ points. Scotty has been the quiet story of the tournament — the man who drew Marty P and Anakin K in the opening rounds added a draw with Zach F in Round 3, then won outright in Round 4. He hasn't lost a game yet. Zach F has been equally impressive from outside the top seeds, going 2½ from his last three rounds. Anakin K rounds out the trio, having beaten Andrew V in Round 4 after Andrew's strong Round 3 showing. Five players are bunched at 2 points — Emerson S (absent Rounds 3 and 4 but holding his score), Marty P, Andrew V, Martin M, and John M — all still in contention for the podium with two rounds to play. Two new faces joined the Knights section on Monday. Leo G and Travis G — a father-and-son duo making their tournament debut — split between sections, with Leo competing among the club's top players in the Knights. At just 7 years old, Leo is almost certainly the youngest player in CDA Chess Club history to compete at this level, and he wasted no time making his mark, earning a win over Brad Niemann in Round 3. Steve D played his first tournament game in Round 4 — welcome to the arena.

♞ The Knaves: Daniel T is Running Away With It

If there's a dominant performance in this tournament, it's happening in the Knaves section. Daniel T went a perfect 4-for-4 on Monday night, winning both Round 3 and Round 4 to reach a perfect 4 points — a full point ahead of the field. He has beaten everyone placed ahead of him in the bracket and hasn't dropped a half-point. With two rounds remaining, he controls his own destiny entirely. Behind him, Christopher Mcconnell and Parker C are tied at 3 points, though they haven't yet faced each other — a matchup that could define second place. Christopher bounced back from his Round 3 loss to Daniel with a Round 4 win over Mike C. Parker won Round 3 over Miles R before falling to Daniel in Round 4. The middle of the section is a spirited crowd. Mike C, Travis G, and Miles R each sit at 2 points, with Travis G continuing a strong run after joining the tournament late. Jadon D and Damian V drew their Round 4 game, both settling at 1½ points. Harvey H received a bye in Round 4, which counts as a point in the standings. Three players made their tournament debut in the Knaves on Monday. Travis G — father of 7-year-old Leo G, who is competing one section up in the Knights — joined in Round 3 and immediately went 2-for-2, picking up wins in both rounds. It seems chess runs in the family, though right now the son has the higher rating. David C also played his first tournament games, and James W picked up a win in Round 3 over Harvey H. Welcome to all three.

♞ What's Next

Rounds 5 and 6 — the tournament's final two rounds — have been moved to Monday, June 1st due to the Memorial Day holiday. The evening runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McDonald's at Riverstone. In the Knights, Ken Erickson is within reach of the title, but Anakin K, Zach F, and Scotty Hohman are all one good night away from making it interesting. In the Knaves, Daniel T needs just a half-point from two games to clinch — but chess has a way of humbling the comfortable. See you June 1st. 📍 McDonald's at Riverstone
