Turkey Shoot Tournament: A Final Recap and a Look Ahead


As the last chess pieces were put away and the final handshakes were exchanged, our November "Turkey Shoot" Tournament came to a close. The event was a wonderful celebration of community, strategy, and the spirit of Thanksgiving. Throughout the month, we saw exciting matches, welcomed new friends, and shared in our collective passion for the game. Thank you to everyone who made this tournament memorable.

With 23 players participating, the atmosphere at Riverstone McDonald's was filled with friendly competition. It was fantastic to see both familiar faces and new members joining the fun. Now, let's look at the final results and see who carved out a victory.

Final Standings: Congratulations to Our Winners!

The competition was close, but one player demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill to climb to the top.

A huge congratulations to Ken Erickson for securing the top spot in this month's tournament! His victory is a testament to his dedication and improvement. In just the last three months, Ken has raised his rating by an impressive 218 points, showcasing what focused play can achieve. Well done, Ken!

The race for the other top positions was just as exciting. Deon earned a well-deserved second place, finishing with a strong 4.5 points.

Just behind him, we had a five-way tie for second place, with Erik, Emerson, Anakin, and Martin all finishing with 4 points each. This demonstrates the depth of talent in our group and the evenness of our players, making every game a true challenge. Congratulations to all of you on your excellent performance!

A Month of Great Chess

This tournament was about more than just the final scores. It was about creating a space for everyone to play, learn, and connect. We are grateful for every player who came out, whether for one night or for all the rounds. The slightly smaller turnout of 23 players this month, compared to last, created a cozy, focused environment perfect for the holiday season.

The spirit of Thanksgiving—gratitude and community—was present every Monday night. We hope you enjoyed the matches and the camaraderie as much as we did.

What's Next on the Calendar?

As we recover from our Thanksgiving feasts, we’re keeping things casual for our next meeting.

  • Open Play Night: This coming Monday will be a relaxed evening of open play. Join us to unwind, practice a few new openings, or simply enjoy a friendly game without the pressure of the tournament clock.

After our short break, we are diving right back into the action with two exciting events in December. Get ready for a festive month of chess!

  • Online Tournament: Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 2nd at 6:00 p.m. for a special online tournament. Play from the comfort of your home and test your skills against our digital community.
  • "Knights Before Christmas" Tournament: Our next over-the-board tournament begins on Monday, December 8th. We invite you to join us for this festive event to close out the year with some holiday-themed chess fun.

The tournament has officially concluded, and it was an exciting competition from start to finish! With ten players vying for the top spot, every match showcased incredible skill and strategy. Ultimately, Eric finished at the top of the club-rated field, emerging victorious with an impressive 2.5 points. Not far behind, Abel secured second place with a solid 2 points.
